Getting It Together

You guys are probably thinking. Where has this girl been?  Well, I have entered into the real world. I recently graduated from college and entered the full time workforce for the first time.  It was quite a transition, but it got me thinking.  These are the big steps that almost everyone takes and sometimes its scary.  At least it threw me for a little bit of a loop.  Here are a few things a I learned from my own experience and from people way wiser than me.

Things Take Time:  When you graduate college it seems like everyone is getting employed, and you’ll be working a part time job making minimum wage for the rest of your life. Don’t worry! More people than you know are going through the same thing.  They all feel the same pressure, anxiety, and stress you are feeling.  However, you shouldn’t really be stressing in the first place because no matter how long it takes eventually you can get a job in your field.  I’m not saying it will be easy or exactly the job you want, but it can be a step in the right direction.

You probably won’t get your dream job or your dream paycheck at your first gig: When I first started looking for jobs I was incredibly selective.  I would only apply to certain companies and certain positions, but as my job search went on I came to the realization I couldn’t do that.  When I first started looking for my job I assumed I could get a job where I wanted with a company in the specific type of job I wanted, that was not the case.  I needed to “broaden my horizons”.  I looked in different locations, different up and coming companies, and different jobs I was qualified for in my field.  Also getting in contact with people helps.  My mom was asking everyone she knew if they knew someone who worked in the fashion industry, and I contacted all the people I had met while interning, while in school, and anyone else who might know someone.

Networking is Key: This sentiment is said in every book regarding any type of career advancement.  So that should tell you something.  I have to tell you it works in more ways than one.  I was able to get my current job by networking as well as hear about a really awesome sample sale from someone else I worked with.  Its not only about getting your foot in the door with networking.  You are able to get background, understand what people want, and what the expectation is.  Also, if your friend was hired, then the person interviewing you probably interviewed (and hired) them and trusts their judgement and their new employee recommendation.

Once You’ve got the Job: Having your first job can almost be as scary as being unemployed.  I don’t know about you, but I tend to put pressure on myself. When I started this new job, I put pressure on myself to be the best and make no mistakes (which is impossible).  So don’t do this, the company hired you so they probably think you are qualified, and it takes time to understand all the procedures and to figure out what goes where.  ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS!!! This is so important because it is the fastest way to learn.  People will be more pissed if you make a silly mistake than if you take five minutes out of their day to ask a questions, just trust me on this.

You are an employee not a slave:  Remember before when I talked about putting pressure on yourself, well this is a by product of that.  When you put pressure on yourself, you feel like you need to preform and that can mean staying late.  Yes, very often especially in the fashion industry we must stay late, but to me that means like seven or eight not midnight.  Or if you do stay that late it can’t be every night.  I’m not just saying that because I like sleep its because if you run yourself ragged like that you’ll get sick and work will suck a lot more or you might have to take off and lose more time.  I’m just saying don’t become a slave to your job.  Your boss will expect that of you and you may not like the consequences.

If you’re not happy, leave:  I haven’t been at this job a long time, but I know I love it.  I love the environment, the people, and the things I work on, but what if I wasn’t?  Some people would stick it out, but then you’re miserable and your work suffers.  If you hate everything about it start looking for another job, and keep in mind that your happiness and your goals are the only things that matter.

I just wanted to send out a little post to let you all know I will be starting up again on Tuesday with my September Favorites (better late than never), let you know what I have been doing, and share a small bit of wisdom I have gained.

I hope you all Enjoy!

Steve Madden sandals similar pair here– These are my work horse shoes.  I wear them almost every day and I can wear them for almost every occasion.  They are comfortable and they go with everything.  These have lasted me through two summers and it looks like they are going for a 3rd!

photo 2

Champion Blue Running Shorts- I just recently purchased these and I am obsessed!  They are a great color combo and I love running in mesh shorts because I don’t have to worry about them riding up when I run (TMI?).  These just make working out slightly less of a pain.

photo 2

Love Culture Midi Rings- I have been looking for a while and these were perfect because it’s a set of 4, each one a different sizes.  I also like them because two are plain and two are this cool triangle shape.  I have just been wearing them as much as possible since I got them.

photo 1

Urban Outfitters Watch- I got this as a gift at Christmas, but this past month I have been wearing it quite a bit.  It just seems like the perfect summer watch with the brown faux leather and them little map I love wearing this with a plain t-shirt and shorts.

photo 1

Black H&M Shorts- I bought these at the beginning of the summer and thank god I did!  They are a new staple in my wardrobe.  I wear these whenever I don’t know what to wear.  My only complaint is that everything white and fuzzy attaches to them so I need to lint roll them sometimes…

-PINK with a Splash All Over Body Mist in Fruity and Bright- This was my perfect scent for summer.  It is light and fresh with just a hit of fruitiness.  I just want to smell it all day!

photo 5photo 1

Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Let’s Get Naked- I have been into a more neutral lip lately and this has been my go to.  This is the old packaging, but they have this shade in the new formula as well.  Its just a nice soft pink shade for my skin tone.

photo 4

Boots No7 Exceptional Definition Mascara in Black/Brown with Marc Jacobs Lash Lifter Gel Volume Mascara in 20 Blacquer on top)- This lash combo has been my go to this month.  The Boots mascara is lengthening and light on my lashes and it separates them beautifully!  The Marc Jacobs just makes my lashes jet black and gives them volume without getting too clumpy.  The Marc Jacobs is only a sample so I will have to find a replacement soon.

photo 2

Sally Hansen Hard as Nails in No Hard Feelings- This purple color is perfect for my skin tone and I have been getting a lot of compliments!

photo 3

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in 630 Long Shot-Its a beautiful orangey, red, pinky color that is just bright and fun!  I am testing it out right now, but without top coat it stays on for about five days.  Right now I am trying it with top coat and I’ll let you know how it goes.

photo 1

Boots No7 Cleansing Balm- This has been a wonderful product for me!  I never used to wash my face except taking my make up off with a cleansing wipe.  This makes it easy to cleanse my face in the morning and at night.  Its hydrating, creamy, and so easy to use!  I never thought I would be using a cleansing balm, but I love it.

Essiebutton-This girl!  I am obsessed with Estee from Essiebutton on Youtube!  She is so engaging and sweet!  I just love watching her videos.  Her vlog is also amazing.  It’s called Essiebuttonvlogs and it makes me want her life a bit (I know I sound like a creep, but don’t judge me!).  Her and her boyfriend just traveled through Scandinavia and it just made me want to go there, try everything, and see everything!

Music by MS MR- This band has been playing every time I get ready.  I mean who doesn’t like a female singer in rock/alternative/pop band (I don’t know things about music genres, I’m just guessing).  Their songs Fantasy and Dark Doo Wop are always what I find myself singing.

Movie-Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore- This is an oldie, but it has been on HBO a lot lately so I have been watching every time it’s on.  Its a cute romantic comedy with two of my favorite celebrities.  It is very cute!

Book-The Fault in Out Stars by John Green-I know, I know.  Why have I only just read this?  I don’t know, but I’m glad I finally did.  Truly, my inner hipster must have kicked in because I didn’t want to believe in all the hype.  I actually listened to this on audiobook and it was a great read/listen.  I was never bored, but I did cry a bit more than I would like to admit (I’m a cryer).  It made me laugh, smile, and ball my eyes out.

Twinnings Green Tea With Lemon-I have been on a tea binge and this month I have been loving Green Tea with Lemon.  Its light and just sweet enough! The perfect summer tea.

Best And Worst From the VMAs and Emmys (Because You Can Never Read Enough of These)

The VMAs and Emmys happened to be a day apart this year which means double the fashion!  Here are my best and worst from the VMAs and Emmys.  Tell me your best and worst in the comments and why!?!!?

VMA Best:

jennifer-lopez 2014 vmataylor-swift VMA 2014iggy-azalea VMA 2014

Jennifer Lopez in Charbel Zoe- This dress is perfect for Jennifer Lopez.  It is glamorous and sexy, but not over the top. She took her style and did it for the VMAs.  Jennifer Lopez knows what she’s doing.

Taylor Swift in Mary Katrantzou- There have been mixed feelings about this look, but I think people just don’t like Taylor herself. I love this romper.  She has a good amount of skin showing without looking exposed.  The look is also fun and different.

Iggy Azaela in Versace-Iggy went all out in this dress! This accentuates her assets and the color is beautiful.  This slicked back hair completed her sexy, but sophisticated look.

VMA Worst:

amber-rose VMA 20142014 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivalskim-kardashian VMA 2014

Amber Rose in Laura Dewitt- I am speechless.  I don’t care how good you think you look, you can’t wear a bikini to an award show.  Gross.

Ariana Grande in Moschino- She must be channeling pretty woman because this girl looks like an escort.  The dress is too short, there is too much skin showing and the boots don’t help.  And I think I speak for everyone when I say, “Ariana CHANGE YOUR HAIRSTYLE!!!”

Kim Kardashian in Balmain- We all know Kim Kardashian has curves, but does she know she doesn’t have to show them off.  When did the VMAs turn into an excuse to bare it all.  Keep it classy ladies.

Emmys Best:

Julia Roberts Emmys 2014Lizzy Caplan Emmys 2014Gwen Stefani Emmys 2014

Julia Roberts in Ellie Saab- I love this designer, I love this woman.  They always get it right.

Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan- This was a show stopper.  Lizzy Caplan looked like a movie star in this.  She was so elegant and poised and sexy, but sophisticated.  I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her.  This was perfect.

Gwen Stefani in Versace- I’m just going to say it.  I think this is the best that Gwen Stefani has ever looked.  Its glamorous and elegant, but it’s still Gwen.  That deep neckline with the hardware was beautiful and then the silhouette was more flowy and loose it was so different and cool.  Gwen Stefani sets the standards for was musicians should wear to award shows.

Emmy Worst:

Kerry Washington Emmys 2014Lena Dunham emmys 2014Katherine Heigl Emmys 2014

Kerry Washington in Prada- People are obsessed with Kerry Washington like she can do no wrong, but completely disagree. There is nothing interesting about this dress except the color and that makes her look like a jack-o-lantern.  Black and orange never look good together and it’s a boring dress.  Not a fan.

Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli- The thing with Lena Dunham is she wears what she wants and I appreciate and understand that.  The dress itself isn’t the reason she is on my worst dressed list.  She needs to wear stuff that actually fits her.  During the Emmys her dress just looked too big like it was going to swallow her up.  She looks like she’s even having trouble walking in to because it is so large.  I like this outfit, I just wish it fit (maybe a different top perhaps).

Katherine Heigl in John Hayles- All I could think when I saw this was “Mother of the Bride”.  I feel like it’s unflattering and a strange color.  The only thing I liked about this was her hair.

So Many Lip Products So Little Time

More and more lip products are coming out.  This one stains, this one moisturizes, etc.  I thought I would spend a post breaking down what a few of these terms mean.  This is just generally speaking, so if you want a post about my favorite product in each category comment below and also tell me what your favorite lip products are!

photo (2)

Lipstick- Lipstick is where it all started.  This type of lip product is purchased if you want full color on your lips.  Lipsticks can come in finishes like matte, lustrous, or cream.  You can also look for certain qualities like long wearing or moisturizing.  Long wearing lipsticks tend to be drying, whereas moisturizing lipsticks need to be reapplied after two or three hours of wear.  When purchasing you need to take these factors into consideration.  Lipstick also tends to have dozens of shades.  If you look hard enough you can find any lipstick shade (even colors like black and green!).  Things to take into consideration when looking for lipstick:

-Is it the right shade for my skin tone?

-Do I need to wear anything under it (lip balm, lip liner, etc.)?

-Does it bleed outside my lips?

– Does it fade evenly?

Lipgloss- This is sheer layer of color to make your lips look more full and well…glossy.  These can range a lot in pigmentation as well as how they feel on the lips.  Glosses can be really sticky or not sticky at all.  Generally the stickier the gloss the longer it stays on the lips.  Some people can not stand sticky glosses because if you go outside and your hair blows around in the wind its going to stick to your lips. Things to consider when looking for lip gloss:

-How much pigmentation do I want?

-How much shimmer do I want in it (1.A lot, 2. A little, or 3. None)?

Lip Balm- This is a moisturizing product and there are a ton of options in the category.  This usually has a waxy consistency and can be either clear or have a sheer hint of color.  These also tend to be scented but there are unscented options out there.  All lip balms are not created equal.  Some lip balms are more moisturizing than others.  My favorites are lip medex by Blistex and anything from Nivea.

Lip Stain- This is pigmented color that stains your lips for longer wear.  These are drying, but some products come with a built in balm to make it less drying.  This is not for you if you have a problem with chapped lips because there are so many other better options.

Liquid Lipstick- This is lipstick in you guessed it…a liquid form.  This is generally a full color product and creamy on the lips.  You can get vibrant colors with this type of lip product and a creamy not quite glossy finish or matte.

Gloss Balm- These are usually in the crayon/jumbo pencil format and they have a glossy finish, but a balmy feel on the lips.  What this means is that your lips will feel moisturized, but you may need to reapply often.

Gloss Stain- With this type of lip product you are able to start with a glossy finish when first applied then becoming a stain as the gloss wears away. I like these because it gives me the stain the moisture and the gloss all in one.

Fall Wishlist 2014

The leaves have started falling and that means Autumn is almost here!  Fall is my favorites season so I was pretty excited to start making a wishlist.  I hope you enjoy, and don’t forget to tell me what’s on your fall wishlist.Fall Wishlist
From Left to Right and Top to Bottom:
Oversized Coat- I need an oversized coat.  When I think of fall I just picture this coat with everything!  I am talking skinny jeans, chunky sweater, and this coat.  I am in love.
Graphic Tee- Graphic tees are getting funnier and funnier, but the ones that really catch my eye are sayings that inspire me.  This “Take More Risks” t-shirt would definitely make me want to take more risks in my life.
Plaid Skirt- I have no idea why I like this for fall.  It is possibly the darker colors or it could be this plaid print.  Either way I would wear this in the cool start to fall.
T-Shirt Dress- I know its a bit floral and springy for fall, but adding my autumn essentials (gray booties and a leather jacket) will really turn this into a whole different look to transition me into fall.
Bucket Bag- I have been seeing this style of bag more and more.  I have a leopard print version of this, but this caramel brown leather really just makes me think of all the things that are fun in fall (pumpkin cheesecake, apple cider, and caramel apples)!
Flat Hat- I love hats for all seasons!  This one will keep you warm, but you won’t look like your ready for winter just yet (that’s how I feel in knit hats).  It has a fun shape and I think it will go with a ton of looks.
Berry Lips and Nails- I have been obsessing over this color.  Every time I see it in a beauty product I want to have it in my life.  I feel like its a transitional color from summer to fall because its pinkish which tends to give me thoughts of summer but its also rich and deep so it gives me that fall feeling.

Review (8/14/14): Freeman Golden Grain Facial Brightening Mask

photo 1

I am sure many of you have heard of the charcoal and black sugar mask by Freeman.  It has been raved about so I wanted to try one of their other masks.  I have pretty dry skin so I wanted to try something that would give me a lot of hydration.  I ended up choosing this hydrating and brightening mask because who doesn’t want brighter skin along with it being hydrated.  Here is what I found after using it for about a month and a half..

Formula- This mask has a yellow tint, but it goes on clear when applied to the skin.  It also has glitter in it so I was bit a put off by that, but you also don’t notice that when its applied to the skin.  The formula is a kind of gel and I liked that because it was easy to apply and I didn’t have to worry about any sort of dripping off your face..

photo 2

Application- The application was simple, you put the mask all over your face and it dries in a minute or two.  You can use this one or two days a week.  You can leave the mask on between 5 and 10 minutes and wash it off when you are done.  The only issue I had with application was that if I applied it too close to my eyes they would burn and water.  When I put it slightly farther from my eyes the problem disappeared.

photo 3

Effectiveness- This was a disappointment for me.  Every time I would wash this off, my skin would feel tight and dry and I would need to apply moisturizer.  As for the brightening I couldn’t see a difference and no once seemed to either, but maybe I am not looking closely enough.

Repurchase?- I would not repurchase this specific mask because it just didn’t work for me.  It was drying, and did not brighten my skin.  I did like the gel consistency as well as the short time I needed to have it on.  Their masks are only about $4.00 so I might try a different one in the future.  If your in the market for a mask try a different one for hydrating and brightening.

Best Places to Find Fashion Inspiration Right Now!

In my last blog post I mentioned it’s a good idea to find fashion inspiration.  I get a ton of inspiration from street style.  Here are some great sites I look to for inspiration and why I keep going back.

Pinterest– I am sure you all know about this.  I just had to mention it.  You can search whatever trend or specific piece you are looking for. For instance, I literally searched what to wear with blazer one time to find some different options and it gave me a bunch of images so I could easily find what I was looking for.  In the image below I searched street style and here are some results I got.

Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 2.49.21 PM

The Sartorialist– This site is great because it gives you street style from all over the world at every age. I love this site because it is so inspiring to see other cultures and what other people wear around the world.

Lookbook– This site I found just in the last year and I really love it because there are SO many different looks (thus the name).  People from all different countries post here too, but it is mostly young people.  With so many looks you can easily find something inspiring for men or women.Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 2.51.11 PM

Easy Fashion– I like this site because there is a good mix between crazy out there style and more attainable looks.  The looks make fashion fun again with so much color and prints!  I can’t get enough.
